Last May 14th to 20th has seen the 14th edition of the Stunfest, more ecclectic and unique than ever, claiming loud and clear its existence as a videogame culture festival, allowing cultural rights to be expressed whatever their form: creative work, cinema, music, workshops, conferences, e-sport, sharing practices and knowledge, training, education, accessibility and health.
THE FESTIVAL WELCOMED 12.000 PEOPLE, 600 OF WHOM WERE COMPETITORS. They travelled the roads, the seas and the mountains to reach Rennes, despite events beyond our control: national strikes, a totally closed station for works, a hectic cultural agenda in Rennes and in the region, not to mention a blazing sun, which invited us to idleness by the sea.
THE 940 STAFF, (EMPLOYEES, TECHNICIANS, VOLUNTEERS, SPEAKERS, MEDIA…) have happily worked their heart and soul out to make each moment of this festival a great experience for everyone. The feedback we get is an invitation to imagine together an exciting and meaningful next edition!
HOWEVER, A DARK CLOUD has been overshadowing the future of the organisation and the Stunfest for several months. The combination of these external constraints during the 2018 edition affected our ticketing system and thus overall revenues and weakened the organisation’s entire budget. To top it all, the public subsidies, although existing, have not kept pace with the festival’s development since 2014, and are not sufficient to meet the challenge of its ambition.
3 HIT COMBO ORGANISATION shows at the end of this edition a serious deficit of more than €70.000 which renders impossible the next edition of the Stunfest and of other activities of the organisation if sustainable solutions are not reached quickly.
UNDER THESE CIRCUMSTANCES,
– the continuation of the 3 Hit Combo year-round functionality is questioned.
– Only voluntary associative activities can be maintained, in proportion to the quality commitment of the members of 3 Hit Combo, elected and members.
– The staff of 3 Hit Combo can no longer be kept on the payroll after Summer 2018.
It is not just a short-term deficit, it is a recurrent and profound structural dilemma. The organisation lacks the human, financial and other means to implement its overall project in sustainable conditions, despite a recognition of its action on the ground in the name of the general interest. 3 Hit Combo has been working in the field of Social and Solidarity Economy with the approval of the French Department of Youth, Popular Education and Voluntary Associations. The project is a singularity on the territory (envied by other cities) and benefits from a constantly growing national and international recognition from organisations, professionals, and many enthusiasts of the
We will continue seeking a response from public funders, as requested since the 2017 break;
We will take steps to preserve the people behind the project;
We will alert our partners and ask them again:
This release is firstly an act of openness and transparency regarding our situation.
But it also is a call for an immediate response from all the partners and stakeholders in order to acknowledge the year-round resourcing function of 3 Hit Combo, and to protect it against what is neutralising the very existence of a cultural association dedicated to video games, as it has been put to us:
(Reply from the Direction Régionale des Finances Publiques (DRFIP) to 3 Hit Combo regarding a request to collect donations and to grant tax rescripts; issued on March 15th, 2016)
The situation of our festival is only an example of the weakening and threatening of the entire associative and independent network throughout France. Other cultural industries (cinema, music, literature) have been supported by public authorities for many years. When will there be a firm stand on the field of new cultural practices, now essential to education, leisure, research and the daily life of each individual?
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Your presence, your messages, your articles, your positive feedback after the festival are heart-warming and reflect the interest and importance you have for us and our work.
Please share this release, for any help will be of great value; we hope to raise awareness of our situation and on the necessity of acknowledging the video game as a cultural object for all who contribute to it.
